SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE |
| Course Objectives: | This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of key debates and foundational texts in Gender Studies. It examines gender as a socio-cultural construct that shapes structures and practices in the realms of economy, politics, culture, and society. The course engages with major theoretical frameworks, including Feminist Theory, Women’s Studies, Queer Theory, and Critical Masculinity Studies. It further explores the historical trajectories and achievements of women’s movements in Turkey and globally. Emphasis is placed on the ethical and political significance of gender equality as a prerequisite for a just, non-violent, and inclusive social order. |
| Course Content: | The course covers key concepts and debates in the fields of Gender Studies, the Feminist Movement, and Women’s Studies. Topics include: Gender and fundamental concepts Women’s movements in the world and in Turkey Gender inequality in education, economy, and employment Welfare in countries with established gender equality "Masculinity" performances and gender-based violence Efforts to promote gender equality Gender studies in Turkey |
| Attendance is mandatory. Students are allowed a maximum of three excused absences. Those who miss more than three classes will automatically fail the course. Students are required to obtain the compulsory course materials. All assigned articles must be read, and the recommended documentaries and films must be watched. Students are expected to follow the course schedule for quizzes and assignments. There are no make-up quizzes under any circumstances. All assignments must be original. Submissions containing plagiarized content will receive a failing grade. Attendance is recorded during live sessions. Following asynchronous materials is mandatory but does not count as attendance. |

1) Students learn the basic concepts in the fields of gender studies and feminist theory. |

2) Students learn about the history of the feminist movement in the world and in Turkey. Feminist pioneers are introduced to students through their struggles and books. |
||
|
3) As a result of the examinations, readings and discussions in the course, students can analyze the patriarchal structure that establishes the contexts of politics, economy, philosophy, literature, historiography, religion, urban planning, employment, social organization, public sphere-private sphere, sexuality and daily life. |

|
1) By having knowledge of feminist theory, masculinity studies, queer theory, students can evaluate them in the context of democracy and human rights. |

|
2) Students can follow the work of the United Nations and developed countries to achieve gender equality and compare countries that have been successful in achieving gender equality with others on issues such as welfare, democracy and violence. |
