SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to examine the historical development of graphic design within the framework of artistic movements, technological changes, and social contexts; and to enable students to evaluate visual communication practices from a critical perspective and to reflect historical knowledge into their own design processes.
Course Content: This course examines the historical development of graphic design from the 19th century to the present. Major movements such as Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Modernism (Bauhaus, De Stijl, Constructivism), the International Style, and Postmodernism are analyzed through typography, poster design, and visual communication practices. These approaches are evaluated not only in terms of their formal characteristics but also within their social, cultural, and technological contexts.

Course Specific Rules

-The course requires active participation rather than passive attendance; students are expected to contribute to discussions.
-Students are required to follow the weekly content and come prepared for each session.
-Assignments are produced not only for submission but also for discussion and further development.
-Late submissions are not accepted.
-Compliance with academic and ethical standards is essential.
-The course is conducted as a shared space for learning and production; mutual respect and responsibility are expected.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) are those describing the knowledge, skills and competencies that students are expected to achieve upon successful completion of the course. In this context, Course Learning Outcomes defined for this course unit are as follows:
Knowledge (Described as Theoritical and/or Factual Knowledge.)
  1) Identify the historical development process and major movements of graphic design.
Skills (Describe as Cognitive and/or Practical Skills.)
  1) Analyze the visual, cultural, and ideological characteristics of different design approaches.
  2) Interpret design language through examples of typography, posters, and visual communication.
Competences (Described as "Ability of the learner to apply knowledge and skills autonomously with responsibility", "Learning to learn"," Communication and social" and "Field specific" competences.)
  1) Integrate historical design approaches into their own design production processes.
  2) Critically evaluate graphic design works within their historical and contextual frameworks.
  3) Discuss the relationship between visual culture and design from a multidimensional perspective.
