SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: The aim of the Contemporary Art course is to enable students to chronologically comprehend the differences of contemporary art, which is assumed to have started in the last quarter of the 19th century, from classical art.
Course Content: The conditions that prepared the revolutionary transformation of art in the 19th century and the connections between successive art movements and social, political and economic conditions constitute the content of this course.

3) Criticisms against the Impressionist art movement, Neo Impressionism and Post Impressionism.
4) Fauvism as the first modern art movement of the 20th century.
5) Art as the First World War approaches: Expressionism.
6) The birth of Cubism as a new revolution in art and Pablo Picasso.
7) The birth of modern art in Italy and Futurism.
8) Midterm
9) Art in the neutral country Switzerland during the Second World War: Dada.
10) The Dada movement in New York and the art of Marcel Duchamp.
11) The impact of the atmosphere between the two world wars on art and literature, psychoanalysis, Surrealism and Salvador Dali.
12) New York attracts modern art: Modern art and Abstract Expressionism in New York after the Second World War.
13) Abstract art and after. The introduction of popular culture and advertising techniques into art and Pop Art.
14) The rising reactions and cultural questioning period after the Vietnam War. Feminism and Feminist art born in this environment.
