SECTION II: INTRODUCTION TO THE COURSE

Course Objectives & Content

Course Objectives: A detailed examination of the characteristics of traditional Turkish homes. An examination of the traditional unity created by the Turkish vernacular architecture at an urban and structural scale. Evaluation from the perspective of interior architecture.
Course Content: An introduction to the basic sources on the Turkish home, the concept, qualities, and origins of the Turkish home. The areas of spread and a general overview of Ottoman vernacular architecture. Factors that make up the Turkish home. The formal development of the Turkish home. Elements that make up the Turkish home; room, sofa, eyvan. Elements that make up the Turkish home; service areas; kitchen, stairs, bath, cell. Function distribution according to floors in the Turkish home. Types of Turkish home plans. The construction system of the Turkish home. Characteristics of the Turkish home facade. Preservation issues with the Turkish home. The Turkish home today.
